The story of Afton Villa is the story of a succession of people who have owned and loved it through over a century and a half, all of whom have contributed something to its beauty and in turn have left something of themselves – their vision, hopes, sorrows, joys, tragedies. It is this intermingling of joy and sadness that gives Afton Villa a strange, haunting beauty that the visitor usually feels as he enters the gates and first looks down through the cathedral-like archway of live oaks that line the winding avenue for one-half mile.
Although a fire in 1963 destroyed the gothic antebellum mansion, the gardens at Afton Villa are among the most famous and picturesque in the state. Beginning in 1972, Genevieve and Morrell Trimble undertook the task of restoring the grounds. Today the estate contains over 20 acres of formal gardens and pleasure grounds, including the famous ruins gardens, a formal parterre garden, a daffodil valley, a historic family cemetery, and more.
The session lasts 2 hours and includes the fee to the grounds. The best time to visit is in the Spring for the Live Oaks for the Tulip beds. Afton Villa is open during the Spring and Fall season and not available for the months of July, August, September, December, January and February. The session also includes a pdf copy of Bonnie's book, "Macro and Close Up Photography for Beginners".
