THE WOODS: The forest of the area is classified as upland hardwood and is part of the Tunica Hills topography, with some loblolly pine and eastern red cedar mixed in on the ridge tops and creek terraces. There are nearly countless amounts of insects and other "bugs and critters" available to photograph. The woods at Rajole Farms are home to several resident and migratory bird species including some that are rare elsewhere in the state, such as the worm-eating warbler, hooded warblers, pileated woodpeckers and the Cooper's hawk. During the summers and into fall, hummingbirds may be numerous. There are eastern chipmunks and numerous snake species, including canebrake rattlesnakes and copperheads as well as other, non-venomous and beneficial species. Other wildlife includes coyote, fox, bobcat, raccoon, opossum, armadillos, deer and turkey.
Prefer something not quite so wild? THE FARM is Bonnie's little heaven on earth, a small farm nestled in the woods with numerous domestic animals such as miniature donkeys, dwarf goats, pot-bellied pigs, 2 very old horses, a peacock, English Mastiffs, 2 Dutch Shepards. There are some small, planted informal gardens with photography opportunities.
THE STUDIO: In addition to a walk through the woods or yard, you'll also select a few botanical specimens to bring back to the studio for a lesson on tabletop (if requested.) The studio is a detached building perched on the edge of a ravine, looking into the woods. Two large windows allow for natural light to enter from the east and the west. In the studio you'll learn tabletop photography and using natural light on your subjects.
The Studio and Farm: There are several flower beds planted with various species of plants and numerous farm life photo opportunities. The studio is air conditioned with student desks and additional photography supplies.
The Woods: It's wild and beautiful. However... when shooting in the woods, tall boots are mandatory. Although all caution is taken to prevent a "meeting," the woods are also home to two venomous snake species . Bug spray is highly recommended. The session also includes a pdf copy of Bonnie's book, "Macro and Close Up Photography for Beginners".
